The NHS has been saved from TTIP -- but now we need to protect it from a new round of trade agreements.

Just a few weeks ago, David Cameron was forced to agree to protect the NHS from TTIP. It was a huge victory for everyone who’s been fighting to stop the sell-out of the NHS to corporate interests.

But now, after the Brexit vote, the NHS is in danger again. Right now, the new international trade secretary, Liam Fox, is scoping out around a dozen new trade agreements to replace the ones Britain will lose by leaving the EU. And some of them could be as bad for our NHS as TTIP.

But there’s some good news. Fox was one of the Conservative MPs who rebelled against David Cameron and called for the NHS to be protected from TTIP. If enough of us speak out, we can make sure he protects the NHS from any future trade deals too.

Liam Fox: protect our NHS in all future trade deals!

In its original form, the TTIP trade deal would have given US corporations unprecedented access to the NHS and irrevocably cemented the sell-out of the NHS to corporate interests. But ordinary people, opposition parties and Conservative rebels came together to protect the NHS from the corporate takeover -- and we won. In the first government defeat on a Queen’s speech for more than 90 years, David Cameron was forced to accept an amendment that protected the NHS from the trade deal.

But now the NHS is in danger all over again. As Britain withdraws from the EU, the government will have to negotiate a whole load of new, post-Brexit trade deals from scratch. And now we urgently need to make sure our NHS is protected from a corporate takeover in every one of those.

Informal negotiations have already started. Right now, the government is talking to countries like the US and Australia to scope out future new deals that will be rushed through so they’re ready to sign by the time Britain leaves the EU.

As a community, we urgently need to make sure the government doesn’t give away our most important right: our right to free and universal healthcare. And, if we come together, we can do it. More than three million of us came together to stop TTIP -- and, while the fight is far from over, we’ve stopped the deal so far. Now we urgently come together again, and tell the government it must protect the NHS in every future trade deal it negotiates.
