BREAKING: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has approved his second major fracked gas project in as many months and third since March. He just gave the green light to TransCanada’s $1.3 billion expansion of the already-23,500 km NOVA pipeline.
Trudeau’s Liberal government promised to end Stephen Harper’s war on the climate. He promised us “sunny ways” and named a Minister of Climate Change. He promised a renewed relationship with First Nations. How does “more pipelines!” fulfill any of those promises?
This government is making a habit of approving pipelines and it’s got to stop. There’s no way Canada will reach its tough climate targets of no more than a 1.5 C rise in temperatures -- targets Trudeau pushed for in Paris -- if we stay addicted to carbon-busting fossil fuel infrastructure.
Tell PM Trudeau to reverse his dangerous approval of the NOVA natural gas pipeline.
In March, Trudeau approved the Woodfibre LNG plant just north of Vancouver. Last month, he approved the controversial Lelu Island Pacific NorthWest LNG plant and First Nations across B.C. are lining up with court challenges. He has also signalled that he plans to approve at least one major tar sands pipeline, with Kinder Morgan, Northern Gateway and Energy East all possibilities.
There’s a reason this is all happening. Oil and gas lobbyists didn’t just give up and go home when Stephen Harper lost the election a year ago -- they’ve been hitting our government up hard. They have reason to believe that the popular Trudeau government might succeed in building pipeline projects Harper never could. It’s up to us -- regular Canadians -- to hold this government to its promises.
Join us and demand that the government rejects the Nova fracked gas pipeline.
