Under the Obama administration, the EPA issued an important rule to tighten safety requirements at high-risk chemical plants. Now, with Scott Pruitt calling the shots, that could all come undone.
The chemical rule was issued following several catastrophic chemical facility incidents including the tragic April 2013 ammonium nitrate explosion at West Fertilizer Co. in West, Texas, which caused 15 deaths, injured a further 300 people, and destroyed up to 500 homes, a nursing home, and a school.
But Pruitt has delayed the rule from taking effect, and kicked off a formal process to consider repealing it. Why? Because an alliance of chemical industry groups affected by the rule wrote to Pruitt asking for such action.
Environmental protections like the chemical rule are in place to protect communities and preserve the state of the environment.
We won’t let Pruitt scale them back so that his fossil-fuel industry friends can cut costs on important safety measures.
Place the pressure on Pruitt: Tell him to place people’s safety before the chemical industry’s interests!
