Bayer and Monsanto have already spent over $6 million on lobbying in Washington, D.C..
And this is only the start -- they will literally stop at nothing to get regulators to approve their massive merger, which would give them unprecedented control over the world’s food supply from seed to table.
That’s why, with so much at stake and facing such enormous opposition, we’re doing something we’ve never done before, and we’re counting on your help.
To stop this merger from hell, we want to hire the smartest, most savvy public interest lobbyist Washington has to offer. Someone who really knows the ins and outs of backdoor policy dealings -- and someone who can carry our voices right into the meeting rooms only corporations normally have access to.
With our own, people-funded lobbyist, we can give Bayer and Monsanto a taste of their own medicine.
We’ve never done this before. Often, creating a huge public outcry in the media is enough to meet our goal.
But this is a special situation. Decisions on mergers are done in backroom deals with little scrutiny from the public. If we want to level the playing field, we need someone on our side who knows how to game the system to our advantage.
Lobbyists are usually our enemies and we fight hard to curb their influence in Washington. But can you imagine if we could get one on our side for this merger and turn things around? This will have Bayer and Monsanto shaking in their boots. If we have a lobbyist working an insider strategy and the SumOfUs community mobilising in the public, there is little that can stop us.
But we cannot do it alone.
Can you chip in to stand up against Bayer and Monsanto?
Thanks to you, we’ve already made tremendous progress towards stopping this merger.
We hired some of the world’s top legal minds to prove that the merger is a disaster and published the results of their analysis as a white paper.
We’ve turned up at public events Bayer and Monsanto are planning to protest this merger. We’ve even gotten celebrity support from Mark Ruffalo for our campaign.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on giant agribusiness mergers. Usually, these meetings are a way for big business lobbyists to push their agenda onto lawmakers -- but this time we made sure your voices were heard.
In fact, even far right-wing Senator Michael Lee from Utah admitted that, “My office has heard many complaints about the potential harm of the merger." That’s us! And Senator Lee was not the only one to criticize Bayer and Monsanto's proposed deal. Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota said this merger “might be too big to fix.”
Let’s keep on turning the pressure onto Bayer and Monsanto. Please chip in so that we can stop this merger.
