Pauline Hanson's back on our screens.
Channel Nine just gave one of Australia’s most prominent racists an unrivalled, paid platform on breakfast show Today to broadcast her hateful, racist views.
In pursuit of ratings and profit Channel Nine put Hanson back on the air. But by doing so, Channel Nine has made itself complicit in fuelling hatred and violence.
Hanson’s hate speech normalises bigotry and emboldens those who seek to do harm to Muslim people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and others.
And hate speech kills: it was only a few months ago that 50 people in Christchurch were gunned down as they gathered at their mosques for Friday prayers.
We need your help to show Channel Nine this is the wrong decision. It needs to take responsibility for its role in spreading hatred, violence, and bigotry.
Pauline Hanson’s rhetoric is dangerous -- it inflames and radicalises.
In 1998 Hanson said in her maiden speech to Parliament that Australia risked being "swamped by Asians". In 2016, she said Australia risked being “swamped by Muslims”.
In 2018, she moved a white supremacist slogan (“it’s ok to be white”) with the Government’s support.
And in the lead up to the federal election Hanson proposed a racist policy to genetically test Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people seeking welfare.
It was only a few months ago that 50 parents, grandparents, children, best friends were murdered by a white supremacist in Christchuch, New Zealand. Another 50 were injured.
It was a tragic reminder of the violence that Muslim people all around the world face each and every day.
We can’t forget this and all the people around the world who have lost their lives to violence fuelled by white supremacy. We need to do more to stop hatred, violence, and bigotry.
We need to be challenging racism, white supremacy, and the far-right at every turn to make sure horrors like this don’t repeat themselves. And we hope you’ll join us.
In the wake of the Christchurch attacks over 10,000 SumOfUs members like you spoke up and told Channel 7 to cancel Pauline Hanson’s weekly slot on Sunrise.
Hanson ended up quitting the show out of her own accord but nevertheless that’s an incredible number of you standing up to hatred and bigotry. If we come together again, we could force Channel Nine to reconsider promoting Pauline Hanson.
Tell Channel Nine: cancel Pauline Hanson now.
