Supermarkets are selling us eggs from truly devastating conditions.
Days after hatching baby female chicks have their sensitive beaks clipped -- a horribly painful procedure done without anaesthetic. Meanwhile male chicks are gassed en masse.
The company responsible for these horrific practices: Noble Foods.
You might not have heard of them, but if you eat eggs you’ve most likely eaten a Noble Foods egg.
Tell Noble Foods to stop these devastating practices today.
There is an alternative -- some farms have banned beak clipping. By giving hens even a little more space there’s no need to chip their beaks.
And technology allows eggs to be sexed early on in incubation, stopping the need to mass kill male chicks.
But Noble Foods is more concerned with its bottom line than with the welfare of its birds.
A Noble Foods spokesperson said in-ovo sexing isn’t viable on a “commercial level”.
And corporate lobbyists have continued to block legislation to ban beak clipping -- successfully postponing it since 2011.
So it’s up to us. We need to pressure Noble Foods to to stop putting its profit above the welfare its birds.
We know corporations care what we think -- and when SumOfUs members put pressure on companies they change their ways pretty fast. Just recently we forced Waitrose to commit maintaining food and animal welfare standards no matter what the result of Brexit negotiations.
Now we need to do the same with Noble Foods and stop these horrific practices.
