Australia’s only 24/7 rape and domestic violence counselling service, call line 1800RESPECT, is at risk of being privatised by the Turnbull Government.
1800RESPECT is run by the specialist counsellors of Rape and Domestic Violence Service Australia (RDVSA). The service is internationally recognised as the best practice service delivery for women, men and children who have experienced sexual assault and family violence.
In 2010, the Government gave Medibank - the now-privatised multinational health insurance company Medibank Health Solutions (MHS) - the job of managing the hotline, and they’ve recently put the specialist counselling service out to tender.
They're looking to contract this critical counselling work out to the lowest bidder in order to maximise their profits.
One in four women in Australia has experienced sexual assault and/or domestic violence. These women, as well as men and children, need specialist counsellor services. Not a call centre run for profit at the lowest possible price.
Help us protect 1800RESPECT and stop corporate profiteering from the victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
