Anti-union ads on the breakroom TV. Threatening meetings with management. It’s all part of Nissan’s scare tactics to stop workers at its Canton, Mississippi base from unionizing.
Workers say the global automaker has created a “Big Brother” atmosphere at the plant in order to suppress workers organizing for their basic rights. Management has even threatened that the 5,000 worker plant will shut down entirely if workers vote to unionize.
From Japan to Australia, Mexico and South Africa, Nissan workers at plants across the globe have exercised their right to form unions. Which makes sense, given that Nissan is a member of the United Nations Global Compact, which prohibits company intimidation of unionization efforts. We can’t let Nissan get away with breaking international labor standards right here in the American South.
Call on Nissan in advance of its annual shareholder meeting to end its intimidation campaign against Canton workers.
Thanks to a report commissioned by the United Auto Workers, and the mobilization of local groups like the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan, Nissan is sure to be feeling the heat. In March, 5,000 auto workers and their families -- armed with 10,000 signatures for a Color of Change petition -- marched to demand Nissan respect their right to unionize and end its pattern of civil rights abuses against its predominantly Black workforce.
But it doesn’t end with anti-union labor practices. While over 2,000 companies have followed consumer calls to end advertising with Breitbart News (AKA Trump News), Nissan has refused to pull its ads from the racist platform. It just goes to show you how often racism and worker exploitation go hand in hand.
With Nissan’s annual shareholder meeting just weeks away, it’s the perfect time for our SumOfUs community to stand with the workers of Canton. From Mississippi to Mexico, Nissan needs to abide by international labor standards and allow workers to unionize. Let’s come together to support brave Mississippi labor activists and put a stop to this anti-union intimidation campaign once and for all.
Demand Nissan respect workers’ right to unionize!
