We can't afford to put off the fight to stop plastic use any longer. At the current rate, plastics will outweigh fish in our oceans by 2050.
Plastic straws are a major contributor to that problem. The U.S. alone throws out half a billion plastic straws every day. Straws are a one-use item that don't biodegrade but instead litter our ocean floor for generations.
But McDonald's could stop its plastic straw use right now. The billion-dollar fast-food chain's beverages have a 90% profit margin and switching to environmentally friends straws would cost only about a penny per drink.
We have a long-term strategy to stop McDonald's shameful plastic pollution, including a hard-hitting video campaign to air during the Olympics, for which McDonald's is a lead sponsor. We've also got a huge opportunity coming up at the McDonald's AGM. One great SumOfUs member has tabled a shareholder proposal on plastic straws that will go to a vote among shareholders! It could be our biggest opportunity yet.
We've won battles with McDonald's before, when we forced the company to commit to sourcing 100% responsible palm oil. And we're not going to give up until McDonald's stops plastic straw use for good—but we need your support.
Will you become a monthly sustainer of our campaign to end McDonald's plastic straw use?
