McDonald’s spent over $2 million on lobbying just last year in America -- but it’s clamping down on political expression among its employees.
It’s not just hypocritical -- it’s in direct contravention of international human rights law.
McDonald’s has a track record of trying to depoliticise its workforce -- who are already discourages from union activity by the corporation. It’s time to say ‘no more.’
McDonalds -- stop infringing workers’ rights for free expression!
As architects of the ‘low road’ economy, with a long history of union-busting behind them, McDonald’s has long been front and centre in the battle for fair pay and decent conditions for workers.
Last year a McDonald’s branch in Birmingham was singled out for paying staff less than minimum wage. Now a report released in September claims the corporation flouted European law, paying almost no tax on over $1.8 billion in profit at its Luxembourg headquarters.
Time and again, McDonald’s carries on with almost total impunity -- while its employees are subject to extreme scrutiny over such trivialities as their private social media feeds.
The BFAWU, who represent McDonald’s workers in the UK, said “Despite being in total contravention of... the United Nations' International Bill of Human Rights, the company continues to stick two fingers up at the law, and acts with complete impunity.”
When free expression is under threat, SumOfUs members, members like you and me, have a record of coming together. Over 100,000 of us signed a petition when Big Telecom tried to undermine Net Neutrality -- a central pillar of free and open debate on the internet.
Now, with McDonald’s trying to impinge on its workers rights to free expression, it’s time to make our voices heard again.
McDonald’s -- your employees rights to free expression are protected by the UN. It’s time to update your company policy!
