It seems McDonald’s isn’t just in the fast food business -- the European Union has just launched a major investigation into the well known chain for dodging over €1 BILLION in taxes.
Since the massive Panama Papers leak, public outrage is mounting against corporations and offshore companies for dodging taxes.
We can use this momentum to pressure the European Council to finally hold McDonald's accountable.
Tell Margrethe Vestager of the EU to hold McDonald's accountable for tax evasion.
The fast food giant is notorious for its poverty wages and bad working conditions -- all while earning record-breaking profits and paying minimal taxes. And McDonald’s is not the only one: Amazon, Starbucks, and Apple have been dodging taxes for years because of tax loopholes and lax regulations. Enough is enough!
McDonald’s siphons all the profits it makes from its individual European restaurants into a tiny Luxembourg-based subsidiary. Between 2009 and 2013, the tiny Luxembourg office earned €3.7 billion -- and paid just €16 million in tax.
Because McDonald’s earns 40% of its revenue from Europe, the EU Commission has the power to hold the fast food giant accountable and force it to pay up. This is not the EU’s first time investigating big corporations. Under Chairwoman Vestager's leadership, the committee has launched investigations into companies like Google, Fiat and Starbucks -- and with enough pressure, we can ensure that she stands up to McDonald’s and hold it accountable.
McDonald’s needs to pay its fair share of taxes.
Will you join us? Tell Margrethe Vestager to hold McDonald's accountable for tax evasion.
SumofUs has run successful campaigns against the fast food giant before. Last year, thousands of SumOfUs members from all around the world stood up to get McDonald’s to adopt a zero-deforestation policy. And it worked!
Together we can continue to ensure that McDonald’s is held accountable around the world.
