Marineland, in Niagara Falls, is the last aquarium left in Canada with whales and dolphins on display. Currently, it has 51 beluga whales, 5 bottlenose dolphins and one orca whale suffering in captivity while it makes millions in profits off their suffering.
After massive public pressure, Vancouver Aquarium announced late last year it will no longer display whales -- and that leaves Marineland as the last vestige of this outdated and cruel practice. The tide appears to be turning: facility after facility and aquarium after aquarium are acknowledging that these intelligent ocean mammals deserve a life of freedom.
Animals rights activists have repeatedly called on Marineland to do the right thing -- but so far, Marineland is refusing to listen. Instead, it's sued its critics. But we've taken on companies like Marineland before and won -- and together we can make Marineland listen. But by mounting a giant wave of public pressure now, we can force Marineland to end its whale and dolphin captivity program once and for all.

Marineland is a huge tourist attraction in Ontario, raking in millions each year from visitors coming to see its captive whales and dolphins. Yet, over 20 whales have died in its care already, including 16 orcas. The most recent whale was Gia, a young beluga, who died last summer.
Since 2012, Marineland has been the subject of several allegations of poor conditions for its animals by former employees.
In the wild, Belugas migrate 5,000 kilometres a year through Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, while orcas and dolphins can swim up to 100 miles in a single day. There is no tank large enough to hold animals whose lives are spent swimming the open oceans.
And the evidence is sobering: globally, the rates of survival estimate for orcas in captivity is just 6.1 years. According to research from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in the wild, males can live 60 years and females as long as 100 years. Displaying whales and dolphins for profit is inhumane and must stop.
SumOfUs has advocated for captive whales before.
Over 1.7 million caring members like you signed a petition calling on the California government to pass a law preventing orcas from being held captive and force SeaWorld to stop holding orcas. And it worked -- SeaWorld can no longer keep orcas and this cruel practice has finally ended in California. We know that when we work together we can protect these majestic creatures from the brutal life of captivity.
