The Trump immigration crackdown means big money for the prison industry - and Libre by Nexus is cashing in. Libre makes $30 million dollars a year - nearly all on the backs of desperate immigrants and their families.
Recently, two Honduran immigrants filed a class-action lawsuit against the bail bonds company. They accuse Libre of deception and extortion of Spanish-speaking migrant detainees.
Libre offers immigrants bail from detention centers while they await their hearings. However, it charges $420/month for a GPS tracking monitor, along with $880/month for an activation fee. In addition, migrants are charged a twenty percent bond security payment - "a shockingly bad deal," even when compared to bail industry standards. Worse, Libre uses the threat of re-imprisonment to pressure debtors who fall behind on payment.
Tell Libre to stop the extortion of detainees and pay compensation to the immigrant families.
Not only is Libre extorting detainees, it is lobbying to reduce legal services provided by the government to defendants at every level of the legal system.
They supported HB 728 in Virginia and Prop 102 in Colorado. These bills would have restricted defendant eligibility for pretrial services, instead requiring them to pay bonds. One sheriff called them "an effort to line the pockets of the for-profit bond industry.”
Speak out now. Sign the petition and tell Libre by Nexus: Pay compensation to the migrants and stop exploiting detainees.
