A massive international trade pact between Canada and the EU was just DERAILED thanks to the people of Wallonia.
Here’s what happened: Canada and the EU were supposed to sign the massive trade pact this week that would allow corporations to sue all levels of the Canadian government in secret courts for lost profits, and weakens labour rights, environmental rights and food safety standards.
But 28 EU members states had to agree first. And while many governments had concerns about the deal, a handful of politicians from a regional government in Belgium called Wallonia used their constitutional veto to stop this dangerous deal in its tracks.
As the deadline to finalize the deal passed, Wallonia was under intense pressure from governments and corporate interests to back down. SumOfUs members across Europe sent thousands of solidarity tweets of Wallonian Parliamentarians urging them to not back down.
And they didn’t. And now, the official CETA signing is off!
The fact that a movement of regular citizens can stand up against a corporate-backed deal that puts corporate profit over democracy and workers' rights is incredible.
Our fight to stop this deal permanently isn’t over, but we want to take a minute to celebrate this stunning victory against all odds. And Wallonia deserves a lot of credit for standing strong. That’s why we’re going to send a thank you card to to Wallonia’s Parliament to thank them. Would you add your voice now?
Sign the card to Wallonia now -- we’ll deliver to Wallonia’s Parliament to thank them for standing up for us!
