So, this is really happening: American tar sands giant Kinder Morgan is suing a handful of protestors for tens of millions of dollars for “trespassing” in a Canadian public park.
At least there is a comical part to it -- the pipeline company's lawyer is trying to argue anti-pipeline protesters’ facial expressions constitute “assault.” In response, people have been taking to social media to make fun of the company by posting pictures of their "Kinder Morgan face". Even Vancouver's mayor joined in the fun.
Unfortunately, Kinder Morgan's 1,000-page lawsuit is no laughing matter. The superstar polluter is not only asking for an injunction against a few activists legally protesting the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline, but for $5.6 million in expenses and $88 million in lost revenues. Per month.
This lawsuit is nothing short of harassment.
Tell Kinder Morgan to drop this ridiculous lawsuit now.
Beyond intimidating people, Kinder Morgan is proving it's willing to do almost anything to get this pipeline project approved. With days to go before the Vancouver municipal election, it's investing big in pro-pipeline political parties, working alongside former Harper government strategists and oil lobbyists to get the job done.
There are so many things wrong with this pipeline. If built, it will cause a fivefold increase in oil tanker traffic off BC's coast -- and massively increase the risk of a major spill in the Salish Sea.
The City of Burnaby has already declared Trans Mountain illegal. The National Energy Board’s approval process of the project has been an utter sham, causing one intervenor, Marc Eliesen, the former head of BC Hydro and an energy executive with 40 years of experience, to quit in disgust. Kinder Morgan wants to drill through a mountain to build the pipeline - and the oil giant is happy to bully anyone to get what it wants.
The people protecting Burnaby Mountains are ordinary people -- mothers, parents, professors and community members who care about the environment. They don’t have the preposterous amount of money Kinder Morgan is demanding from them. And yet an American corporation is actually suing them for trespassing in a city park!
Use the form on the right to join us in demanding Kinder Morgan stop bullying Canadian citizens and drop its lawsuit.
