On July 2016, 60 concerned Kiwis delivered 40,000 petition signatures to the Ashburton District Council to oppose the corporate buyout of water in the Canterbury Plains. The Council was holding firm on its decision -- but thanks to you it just backed out of the sale. Our water is safe!
This is a stunning victory and it was only possible because of you and our friends at Action Station and Bung the Bore.
Tens of thousands of SumOfUs members signed the petition, and hundreds more chipped in to fund a petition delivery and huge mobile billboard. Our friends at Action Station helped fund and organize the petition delivery with Bung the Bore, who sent our message loud and clear to the Council.
This is a huge win for people who depend on the water of Canterbury Plains, and a huge loss for those who want to privatise our precious water.
Check out this short video of the petition delivery. While you’re there, would you also consider donating to our future work fighting corporate interests in New Zealand?
No one has fought corporate water theft across the globe like SumOfUs. After a quarter of a million of us denounced another water grab in the United States, we helped Hood River, Oregon pass the first ban on commercial water in the country.
We made front-page news in Canada when Nestlé was taking public water for pennies a gallon, and forced the government to review its water legislation. Now, thanks to you, we can add New Zealand to our success stories against corporations that want to profits off our precious water.
This summer, we are going to focus on protecting public water resources to Arizona, California, and Ontario, Canada.
Would you please consider donating to help us fight for water rights around the world?
