Urgent Appeal To PepsiCo’s CEO from Rainforest Action Network and SumOfUs: Address Conflict Palm Oil
Dear Ms. Indra Nooyi,
Under your leadership, PepsiCo seeks to solidify its position as the largest globally distributed snack food company in the world, and in doing so is consuming more Conflict Palm Oil each year. Let’s make no mistake: Conflict Palm Oil is an extractive and polluting industry, and one that has inadequate environmental safeguards, exploits workers, and drives the displacement of local communities from their lands.
PepsiCo’s customers around the planet have clearly communicated their demands for the company to clean up its act, and its peers––including half of the Snack Food 20 companies targeted by Rainforest Action Network––have begun to show that it can be done. But over the course of the last two years, PepsiCo has failed over and over again to take meaningful action and address its Conflict Palm Oil problem where it matters most––on the forest frontlines in Indonesia, Malaysia and Latin America.
I’m appealing to you to lead your company on a new path––one that will tackle the impact of the Conflict Palm Oil in its global supply chain.
PepsiCo must demand that its suppliers––regardless of where their operations are in the world––halt the expansion of palm oil at the expense of forests, our climate and the rights of local communities and workers.
We’re reaching the tipping point in our efforts to transform the way that palm oil is produced. We need YOU and PepsiCo to make a stand for the climate, the world’s last rainforests including in the Leuser Ecosystem––the home to the last Sumatran rhinos, tigers, elephants and orangutans––and the families who live and work there.
Take action now and secure a legacy that you can be proud of.
