What are the potential solutions?
Demand companies implement better recycling systems.
Cafes can pay specialised waste management companies to collect and recycle their coffee cups using special equipment. But these only operate in some places, are relatively small scale and are costly. Plus they only work if people dispose of the cup at the cafe.
Implement a ‘latte levy’.
Much like a charge on plastic bags at the supermarket, this would mean an additional surcharge is added each time customers order a coffee in a single use, disposable cup.
Demand companies offer a discount for reusable cups.
This incentivises reusable cup use. Many independent cafes already do this, but some bigger chains don’t.
