Villagers in Jagatsinghpur, India are fighting, for the second time in 15 years, to protect their homes and forest livelihoods from steel companies.
They’ve already been to hell and back going up against giant corporations -- they’ve been arrested, attacked and lost their jobs.
And just when they managed to drive one greedy steel company out of their home, another one, looks set to swoop in.
They’re determined to stop the destruction of their forest. Will you help make sure they succeed again by piling pressure on JSW to leave Jagatsinghpur alone?
Tell steel company JSW not to build its mega-plant in Jagatsinghpur!
The villagers’ battle for their land began in 2005, when the South Korean company Posco moved in to build a sprawling steel plant.
It took more than 10 years, but the community persevered -- through countless arrests and Posco’s rampant destruction of their croplands and forest. And in the end, they beat the steel giant and kicked them out. It’s an inspiring story from a very determined community.
But now, another company is hungrily moving in -- JSW Utkal Steel, part of a $14 billion multinational conglomerate. It’s picking up where Posco left off, preparing to displace nearly 450 families and bulldoze the forest to the ground.
And in an effort to stop locals from protesting it’s trying to bribe them with scholarships from its foundation.
Let’s show this community they’re not fighting alone. With their resources depleted from over a decade of resistance, these are people who need you on their side, to show JSW they won’t be bought off – and drive out the steel corp for good. Can you sign the urgent petition so these villagers can defend their home against the steel industry?
Tell JSW Steel you support the villagers of Jagatsinghpur!
Over and over again, SumOfUs members like you have been shoulder to shoulder with local communities defending their homes from the billionaires trying to squeeze them dry.
From taking on the world’s second-biggest gold mining corporation after it threatened an indigenous farmer in Peru, to defending UK towns against nefarious frackers -- you’ve done it all. And with your people power supporting the villagers of Jagatsinghpur, it’s only a matter of time before JSW Utkal Steel turns tail and leaves the land alone.
