Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold is at it again, this time in the Dominican Republic.
Pueblo Viejo, one of the largest gold mines on the planet, has devastated thousands of lives – communities can no longer grow crops or raise livestock. Cancer and miscarriage rates have skyrocketed.
Locals have tried everything to fight back, creating roadblocks and chaining themselves to chairs in protest. But it’s gotten worse, not better.
They’ve come to a heartbreaking decision: their homes are no longer safe or livable. They’re asking to be relocated, but the government is dragging its feet.
To force them to act, a local group needs to run a study that proves their land is no longer fit for living, and that the mine poses a deadly risk – but it’s not a rich community, and they don’t have the funding. If 10,000 of us quickly chip in, we can change that, and get this community to safety, fast. Are you in?
