Content warning: Gun violence
In 1996, 35 people were killed at the hands of Martin Bryant in Australia’s worst mass shooting.
Our government response was swift: to confiscate hundreds of thousands of guns. It worked. Since then, Australia’s had just one deadly mass shooting.
But the US? They’ve had 255 mass shootings this year alone. More than one a day. And most recently -- 31 people, loved ones to others, lost their lives in El Paso, Texas, and in Dayton, Ohio.
As people living in Australia you and I can’t change US gun laws.
But here’s what we CAN do. In the last decade more than half of the deadliest shootings were financed with credit cards. If we force Visa to flag big guns sales as suspicious activity -- we could help save countless lives.
There are slim chances that gun control laws will be passed in Trump’s America. The gun lobby is powerful.
But that doesn’t mean we need to stand by silently as people are dying.
If you’ve ever received a fraud alert from your bank or credit card then you already know how easy it is for those companies to spot and investigate suspicious activity.
Visa can make this change! It already reports high-value transactions that trigger suspicions of fraud, money laundering, other forms of terrorism, and other crimes.
But Visa’s bosses refuse to act. We need your help to make it impossible for them not to. By working together to create a big showing of people power.
SumOfUs members like you have made companies cut ties with the gun industry. PayPal and Apple Pay block gun sales on their platforms, and United Airlines, Hertz, and countless others have ended their NRA discounts. Now you can push Visa to save lives too.
Let’s honour the lives lost in Sandy Hook, Parkland, at the Pulse Nightclub, and others. Let’s help put an end to this horror.
Help stop the next tragic mass shooting by calling on Visa to take action to save lives.
