The extremely cute, extremely timid vaquita is the most threatened sea mammal in the world. Just 7 or 8 are thought to remain, driven to the edge of extinction by illegal fishing nets that ensnare and drown these tiny porpoises.
But there’s a new plan to save them. And we can help make it happen!
The vaquita’s only home is a small patch of ocean near San Felipe in Mexico, where three community groups are pioneering a scheme to give locals free, sustainable fishing gear that’s completely safe for vaquitas.
Already dozens of fishers have made the switch, but time is running out. That’s why these groups are urgently asking for money – to help buy safer nets and fish traps, train people how to use them and get them onto fishing boats before it’s too late.
Can you chip in to help save the vaquita and protect marine environments everywhere?
