But if the PM’s speech this week finally clarified her position on the matter, it was anything but comforting: today we’re worried for employment protections, for our public institutions, for the environment and for the future of our country.
May’s insistence that Britain isn’t afraid to become a tax haven if Europe doesn’t bend to her demands means the gloves really are off now. But after seven years of austerity and low-pay, insecure work on the rise, this is a step too far: no more concessions for the rich, we need to make sure Brexit means a fair deal for everyone.
We don’t want to be a tax haven run by unregulated corporations!
With everything still up in the air, the next few months will be vital in making sure we keep as much of the good stuff from the EU as possible. That includes protection for workers, keeping environmental standards and, pivotally, a system of taxation that means the rich pay their fair share.
If we let ourselves become an offshore tax haven, it will mean permanent austerity, as the money required to keep our public services funded, including our NHS and pensions, will disappear.
Times like these can often divide a nation. But now that May’s speech has cleared up some lingering questions from the referendum, we can begin to talk about what unites - rather than divides - us. And if there’s one issue that both leavers and remainers can agree on, it’s that corporations should be paying their fair share of tax.
I know, I know: it seems impossible. Sometimes it feels like the game is rigged against us. But there is always hope -- last year, after almost 60,000 signed our petition, the government dropped their plans for businesses to list foreign workers. This was a massive U-turn, and it happened because of people power.
In a moment where public opinion is so important in deciding government policy, it’s important for us to speak loudly, with one voice on this.
Let's stand together and tell this government that we don’t want the UK to become an offshore tax haven!
