One week from today, the European Commission will vote on banning Monsanto's weedkiller, glyphosate, after 2022. This is our best chance yet to get this probable carcinogen off the market.
If we can't pass a ban, the European Commission will push for a lengthly 5- to 7- year extension of the permit to use glyphosate.
That would be a huge gift to Monsanto and a massive blow to the environment and public health.
The fight against glyphosate and Monsanto won't be decided in a week or a month. We are relying on you, our members, to provide the ongoing support we need to keep pressuring Monsanto in every country the company operates in. Will you make a monthly donation to help stand up to Monsanto and end glyphosate?
The European Commission's spokesperson said Tuesday that they will try to "find a broad consensus" over a 5- to 7-year renewal for glyphosate. But there can be no "broad consensus" without disregarding the threats to our health and the environment.
The World Health Organization's cancer research institute has found that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen. Research shows that pregnant women exposed to glyphosate have infants with low birth weights and birth defects.
And glyphosate has even been shown to harm bees' ability to navigate back to their hives.
In the short term, we’re going all-out to convince E.U. member states to vote against any extension of the glyphosate permit. We’ve commissioned polling to show that the public wants Monsanto's cancer-causing weedkiller banned, and we've helped collect 1.3 million signatures for the Stop Glyphosate European Citizens' Initiative.
But regardless of whether Monsanto gets the extension they are looking for now, the fight will continue in the E.U. and around the world. Will you make a monthly donation to help stand up to Monsanto and end glyphosate?
