In a detention center in Texas, a man pleaded with prison
guards to adjust his epilepsy medication. Instead, they threw him in solitary
confinement. A month later he was dead due to complications from a seizure.
This horrible misuse of power happened inside a detention
facility operated by international for-profit prison titan, GEO Group. In the US alone they manage 64 detention centers, with reported
revenue of over 1.5 billion. Much of it stems from contracts with federal
governments. In response to years of horrifying
reports of abuse, shareholders finally asked GEO Group to be audited.
They refused.
What do they have to
hide?
Sign the petition and
demand that GEO Group be transparent and allow third-party audits of their
correctional and detention facilities.
GEO Group has not only had prisoners die under their care. Over the years, allegations of sexual
assault, harassment, filthy conditions, and overcrowding have been leveled at
the for-profit conglomerate.
In a social climate ripe for the mass imprisonment of
refugees, immigrants and people of color- GEO
Group refuses to make an honest effort to improve the lives of inmates.
These audits would have examined rates of
violence, use of force incidents, and lockdowns. We as global citizens need to
speak out and demand accountability and humane treatment for inmates.
Sign the petition and
fight for what’s right. GEO Group, permit independent audits of your correctional
and detention facilities, now.
