Update 13 September 2019: Sainsbury's has pledged to remove plastic bags from its fruit and veg sections by the end of this month in a bid to halve its plastic waste by 2025. If Sainsbury's can free the fruit & veg, why not Waitrose?
We’re so close to seeing supermarkets ditch pointless plastic for good. Sainsbury’s AND Waitrose are giving shoppers in six local stores the option to shop plastic-free!
It’s clear: public appetite to fix the global plastic crisis is getting through to supermarket HQs.
But it’s not quite the slam dunk our planet so desperately needs. Too often corporations make promising PR moves like this to win eco-credentials and hope we won’t notice if they quietly tip-toe back on them.
We can’t let that happen, and that’s exactly where you come in. We need to mount a huge public call to demand Sainsbury’s and Waitrose roll these schemes out nationwide -- and now!
In a world free of unnecessary plastic packaging, supermarkets should offer loose produce, priced more cheaply or no more than plastic-wrapped equivalents.
Pre-chopped or prepared food can be a lifeline that allows people who are unable to chop and peel fruit and veg themselves to eat healthily. So we're not talking about those products, but those plastic bags of apples or plastic-wrapped single aubergines that are longing to break free.
You can break them free -- but only if we force Sainsbury’s and Waitrose to make the first big move.
And there’s no time to spare in the war on plastic waste. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to our oceans. A total of 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our seas every year -- that’s equivalent to five shopping bags of waste on every foot of coastline in countries including Britain. And as a result it's estimated that every year, over a million seabirds and over 100,000 other marine animals -- like sea turtles and whales -- die.
But thankfully we’re at a tipping point in the fight to save the planet from our plastic addiction. Thousands of shops, governments and institutions are already voluntarily ditching plastic junk, like bags and bottles for one reason: because hundreds of thousands of people like you demanded it. And in our capital city, ordinary folk have been rallying on the streets outside top supermarkets to demand change. Now, let's ramp the heat on Sainsbury’s and Waitrose to free our food from unnecessary packaging across the country!
Tell Sainsbury’s and Waitrose: extend your plastic-free trails to every store nationwide, now!
