When Monsanto began selling genetically engineered, pesticide-resistant seeds, farmers everywhere warned that pesticide drift could cause massive damage.
Now that's exactly what's happening. At least 3.6 million acres of crops have been damaged by Monsanto pesticides blowing in the wind, carried from one farmer's land to another planted with natural, non-GMO crops.
It's just the latest example of Monsanto's greed destroying everything in its path -- and now that the Bayer-Monsanto mega-merger is complete, the combined corporation will have the power to do even more widespread harm.
That's why we're teaming up with Friends of the Earth to introduce groundbreaking legislation that will protect farmers, consumers, and the environment from this new corporate agriculture giant. And with the growing outrage at Monsanto, there's a real chance of getting this bill passed.
Monsanto's corporate rap sheet is a mile long: DDT, Agent Orange, PCBs, price-fixing, lawsuits against farmers. Frankenfoods, glyphosate . . . the list goes on and on.
The thought of Monsanto joining forces with Bayer to create a giant pesticides and seed company with unprecedented power over our food supply is terrifying. That's why we need to take action now to rein in the potential for further abuses and prevent future mega-mergers and consolidation in corporate agriculture.
And Monsanto's latest scandal is creating the political opportunity for real action by causing people even in red states to turn against the corporation.
The issue is Monsanto's pesticide, dicamba, and its genetically engineered dicamba-resistant seeds. Dicamba is a potent herbicide, and farmers who plant dicamba-resistant seeds are directed to spray it widely.
The problem is that when neighboring farmers haven't planted Monsanto's genetically engineered seeds, their crops are destroyed. More than 2,700 complaints have been filed against Monsanto, and farmers are fuming -- and terrified about what Bayer and Monsanto will do together.
To stand up to the new threat posed by the combined Bayer-Monsanto mega-corporation, we want to introduce a bill that will require pesticide companies to pay into a drift compensation fund to help farmers and a moratorium on additional agricultural mergers.
