On average, Trump lies at least 12 times a day -- and that’s before the Coronavirus crisis.
Now with the election around the corner, he could spend millions spreading all kinds of lies through Facebook ads and get away with it -- because Facebook has shamefully said they won’t fact-check political ads!
It’s outrageous, and a serious threat to our democracy.
But now there’s an app that blocks Facebook ads. If millions of people sign this urgent call for Facebook to fact-check political ads, and pledge to download the ad-blocker, we could hurt Facebook’s main revenue and force Mark Zuckerberg to rethink his strategy on political ads.
This will only work if we all do it together. Add your name and share this widely.
We wouldn’t be the only ones calling for this. Elizabeth Warren made a fake advertisement about Zuckerberg to make a point about how dangerous their policy is, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez whose success relied heavily on Facebook ads, would rather support a complete ban on political ads if Facebook won’t fact-check them at a minimum.
Some will argue this is a tall order, especially if the political candidate is running thousands of ads at the same time. But Facebook is one of the most powerful technology companies in the world -- hiring people to do something as simple as fact-checking is certainly feasible, and they can build tools to help streamline the process.
Despite the millions of dollars Trump is pouring into Facebook, political ads only account for 0.5% of Facebook’s revenue. So our strategy of creating massive pressure for fact-checking AND threatening to block all ads which will actually hurt Facebook’s bottom line -- could force Facebook to do this.
