In Trump's America, the number of immigrant families broken apart grows day by day. And Peter Thiel’s Palantir is going to help him do it -- using cutting edge technology that collects personally identifiable information to help ICE target, detain, and deport millions of immigrants.
Thiel, the founder of PayPal, is the black sheep of Silicon Valley. And for good reason: he donated $1.25 million to Trump’s campaign, helped run Gawker into the ground, and has turned his eye for tech towards big data and government surveillance. So why is he still sitting pretty on Facebook’s Board of Directors?
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has defended Thiel’s position on the board, saying he can’t exclude “half the country because they back a political candidate.” But enabling mass deportations isn’t just a difference of opinion -- it’s a matter of life and death for the millions of immigrant families Palantir will tear apart.
Call on Facebook to take a stand for immigrants and remove Peter Thiel from its Board of Directors.
In 2014, Palantir won a $41 million contract to build and operate an intelligence system to help ICE agents identify and build case against immigrants. Now, with Trump “taking the shackles off” ICE, Palantir’s system is set to enable even more damage for immigrant communities than we saw under Obama.
By streamlining mass databases ranging from public schooling to phone records, Palantir gives ICE agents the information they need to stake out churches, schools, and family homes to round up immigrants. But despite his penchant for authoritarianism, Thiel retains deep ties in Silicon Valley, from sitting on Facebook’s board to maintaining investments in Spotify, AirBnB, Zocdoc, Lyft, and more.
Zuckerberg has been outspoken in his opposition to the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant executive orders. He’s cited his own family’s immigrant background, and his volunteer work with undocumented youth. But while Peter Thiel sits on Facebook’s board, Zuckerberg is telling us that anti-immigrant violence deserves a seat at the table. That’s why we’re coming together to call on Facebook to take a real stand for immigrants and remove Thiel. Earlier this year, hundreds of thousands of you signed petitions to push Facebook and Zuckerberg in the right direction on censorship. And the company paid attention-- Zuckerberg mentioned our campaign work in his "Building Global Communities" post. So if we put enough pressure, we can move Zuckerberg again to get Thiel ousted.
Tell Facebook that Peter Thiel and Palantir have no place on its board of directors.
