The UN just slammed a US firm for exporting Cambodian mother’s breast milk to women in the US, claiming it’s a form of exploitation.
Utah-based Ambrosia Labs set up a facility in a low-income area of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for lactating mothers to pump their breast milk for a profit.
Of even bigger concern is that this ethically questionable practice could compromise the health and nutritional needs of local Cambodian children, where almost 40 percent of children under 5 are chronically malnourished.
To make matters even murkier, health officials haven’t even determined if human milk should be treated in the same category as human organs or tissues.
The Cambodian government this week temporarily banned exports by Utah-based Ambrosia Labs. The FDA needs to weigh in on this issue and set clear regulations and standards.
So we’re calling on the FDA to take action. FDA: Update your regulations and ban controversial breast milk imports!
