Trust in the media has hit rock bottom with George Osborne’s appointment as Editor of the Evening Standard.
With no relevant journalism experience, what exactly can George Osborne contribute as editor of a major London daily newspaper? And as a Conservative sitting MP, can he really ensure the Evening Standard is representative of Londoners?
With Osborne at the helm, he has full reign to promote policies he supports -- with no accountability whatsoever. And it is also certainly impossible for him to question the policies of Parliament, when he belongs to the very institution himself!
Tell the Evening Standard to give London’s free paper its independence back.
The government’s own standards watchdog, The Committee on Standards in Public Life, plans to investigate into MPs’ jobs and other outside interests following the revelation of Osborne's new job. We can add pressure for the Evening Standard to withdraw his appointment as editor.
Osborne’s appointment is putting the principles of democracy at stake. Only a diverse independent press and broadcast can guarantee the existence of our democratic system. Several media platforms have rallied together to denounce the appointment as part of their work to improve better representation in the media and to ensure journalism stays out of the hands of the powerful.
It is high time to hold the Evening Standard to account for handing over editorial control to a politician and the independence of London’s free daily paper along with it.
