No excuses now -- when will the @EU_Commission change 🇪🇺's outdated law on farmed animals, to ban cruel cage systems and #EndTheCageAge?
— SumOfUs (@SumOfUs) June 11, 2021
Cages inflict suffering on enormous numbers of farm animals like pigs, chickens and rabbits, every year -- only to increase agribusiness profits. But a massive coalition of grassroots NGOs is uniting to push the EU this year to end the cage age.
If you are a voting-age EU citizen, you can join!
Here’s the plan: We need one million people across Europe to join the campaign and sign our European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to ban the use of cages in animal farming.
There's only 9 days left, but we can do it: We need one million people to join the campaign and sign our European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to ban the use of cages in animal farming. In fact, we want to gather way more than one million signatures by Wednesday 11 September, so we'll have a good buffer in case some signatures are rejected.
A successful ECI petition guarantees us a right to a public hearing in the European Parliament, and compels the Commission to spell out what action it will take in response.
Please note, this is a little more complicated than usual though, because it is an official EU petition.
For legal reasons, signing is a two step process: First sign with SumOfUs here so we can keep you updated. Then you can sign officially on the next page. Your government decides what information is requested and will use it to validate your signature (e.g. your place and date of birth). SumOfUs cannot access your data from that form -- it’s just for your government.
To support a European Citizens' Initiative, you must be an EU citizen (national of an EU member state) and be old enough to vote in European Parliament elections (18 except Austria where the voting age is 16). You can click here to sign the ECI directly.
