There’s a nightmare merger in the works between agrochemical giants Monsanto and Bayer that would put a massive chunk of our food supply in the hands of a single mega-corporation. But Utahns are uniquely placed to do something about it. Utah Senator Mike Lee is among the few to voice concern over this merger. Sen. Lee is up for re-election in November -- which means he will be especially receptive to our call to do the right thing. He just needs the right encouragement.
Utahns are in a valuable position to stop the nightmare Monsanto-Bayer mega-merger. Please sign the letter below and we will deliver it directly to Senator Mike Lee next week.
See below for the letter SumOfUs will send to Senator Lee on your behalf.
Dear Senator Lee,
I’m writing to thank you for your past leadership regarding increased business concentration in our nation and the proper role of antitrust laws in safeguarding competition and innovation.
As one of your constituents, I want to express to you how deeply alarmed I am by the recent proposed merger of A.G. Bayer and Monsanto. Even more alarming, this merger is occurring in the midst of several other mergers in the agricultural sector. As I’m sure you know, our farmers are increasingly squeezed from both sides in their business. They pay high prices for seeds and other inputs, and the price they can sell for is kept down by concentration in the distribution market. We need our farmers as stewards of the land and as producers of our food. This merger is bad for them.
That is why I’m particularly concerned about the Bayer-Monsanto merger from an innovation and environmental perspective. We already have too little research and innovation in this field. And the companies that do innovate are locked into research programs that create toxic products that imperil our food safety and the earth we live on. Bayer-Monsanto would make an already bad situation dire.
I know you care about these things. Please strongly opposed the merger in a letter to the Department of Justice and other appropriate federal agencies.
Sincerely,
[Your name here]
