Mass arrests, the execution of protesters, and internet blackouts plummeting an entire nation into darkness. This is what the Iranian people are facing today, as the government violently cracks down on their inspiring demonstrations for basic human rights and freedoms. But we have a real opportunity to help them.
Elon Musk promised to connect Iranians to the internet by linking them to his Starlink satellite internet service, but he still hasn't made it happen. If we urge the tech billionaire to keep his promise, we can help make sure that people in Iran are able to communicate safely with each other, access reliable information, and show the world what’s going on in their country.
It’s a matter of life and death to get Iranians back online. Add your name, and as soon as our call is big enough to make a difference, we will launch an advocacy and media blitz targeting Elon Musk, to make sure he keeps his word.
Tell Elon Musk to keep his word and get Iranians back online.
While Elon Musk has already activated Starlink in Iran, he’s yet to waive the hefty $110 monthly subscription fee that Iranians simply cannot pay. The vast majority can’t afford it, and even those who can are not able to pay because Iranians don't have credit cards. They are cut off from the international banking system. The few Starlink systems that work inside the country are paid for by activist groups outside, severely restricting their utility.
Elon wants to take credit for connecting the Iranian people, but he is opting for optics over substance. A shadow web could be effective in Iran with as few as 5,000 Starlink dishes. The least Elon should do is to waive Starlink’s monthly subscription fees in Iran.
Elon waived these prohibitive fees in Ukraine, where Starlink dishes effectively replaced the internet that was taken down by the Russian invasion, and he can waive them in Iran too. Let’s pile on public pressure to make sure that he does.
This will only happen if thousands of us take action now. Time is of the essence, as government repression against peaceful protestors is escalating, and the Iranian government is racing to create a domestic “intranet” that will allow it to disconnect the Iranian people from the global internet completely. Add your name to our petition, and share it widely.
Tell Elon Musk to keep his word by waiving Starlink subscription fees in Iran. We know from experience that when the Iranian government clamps down on the internet, it ramps up arrests and killings. Under the cover of darkness, it uses violence and isolation to break people’s spirits and to crush their efforts to build a more free and just society. Together we can do something concrete to prevent this from happening, and express meaningful solidarity with a people bravely fighting for “Woman, Life, Freedom.”
