We’re all trying our best to cut back on plastic, but supermarkets are standing in our way. It turns out they’re charging more for loose fruit and veg than if it's plastic wrapped!
Now’s the perfect time to call them out. British shoppers are waking up to the plastic crisis and supermarkets are facing daily criticism in the news for their plastic waste. A big petition could be all that’s needed to make them stop and try to regain their reputation.
Supermarkets are feeling the heat over their wasteful plastic packaging -- after it was revealed that British supermarkets create nearly one million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Under public pressure, Iceland supermarket is leading the way and ditching plastic on its own brand products.
But investigations have found that some supermarkets are penalising customers for trying to help the environment -- by charging them more.
At Asda a three-pack of peppers cost 99 pence but the same amount loose are £1.65. At Tesco baking potatoes cost 80 pence per kilo in plastic, but buying them loose shoots the price up to £1.20. And at Morrisons and Sainsbury’s you’ll pay more for salad tomatoes without the plastic packaging.
Many of us are feeling the pressure of rising bills and stagnant wages, but we still want to do our bit for the planet. It’s not fair that supermarkets are making it harder for us to buy fruit and veg without plastic wrapping.
We all need to change the way we use plastic to help stop the world’s looming plastic crisis.
Beneath landfill sites, toxic chemicals from plastic spill into our rivers and streams. Animals become entangled in all this plastic or mistake it for food. In fact, scientists estimate that 90% of seabirds already have plastic in their gut.
Help change the way supermarkets sell our fruit and veg, and protect our planet.
