Deliveroo is robbing its riders of their employment rights by claiming they are self-employed.
Deliveroo riders are required to undergo a trial shift, wear Deliveroo’s uniform and are paid a set rate with no control over the terms and conditions. Riders are even supervised through performance reviews.
Yet, Deliveroo are proudly calling their riders self-employed. By taking advantage of the gig economy, it is taking all the power and control over its riders without taking any responsibility of its riders and their welfare.
Tell Deliveroo to give riders their due employment rights.
In Australia, a rider revealed Deliveroo has the audacity to conduct ‘speed tests’ that involve riders running red lights in order to prove they are fast enough to deliver their food! Riders are also expected to pay a ‘deposit’ for the Deliveroo uniform, provide their own cycling equipment including maintenance, pay for their mobile phone and data use, and have their own health insurance. It is denying its workers any sense of financial security that is needed to make ends meet.
Deliveroo riders have been building confidence to stand together to demand for their rights. In the UK, they managed to convince Deliveroo to stop hiring new recruits to ensure work for existing riders. Now they need our help to fight for their full employment rights such as a living wage, holiday and sick pay and employee health and safety.
Deliveroo is a multinational online food delivery service operating in cities across the world. It can surely afford to give its riders the employment rights they deserve.
Tell Deliveroo its riders are indeed employees.
