Although CETA has passed in the European Parliament, the fight against the dangerous trade pact is far from over.
For the EU-Canada trade deal to be fully implemented, it still needs to pass 38 different national and regional European Parliaments.
We just learned that the Irish government is prepared to wave CETA through -- even though it has not even conducted a cost-benefit analysis on the financial impact that CETA will have on the country.
We urgently need the Dáil to step up and use its power to stop CETA. Can you help make that happen?
Under the deal, rather than an Irish or EU court, a commercial tribunal will adjudicate and decide on damages when a company sues a state. There are no records or documentation of a cost-benefit analysis carried out by the government on how this will economically affect the country.
This just goes to show that there is a shocking lack of analysis and discussion about CETA. CETA paves the way for Canadian corporations to sue EU countries over regulations they don’t like -- jeopardising our ability to protect the environment as well as workers’ and consumers’ rights.
It's just unacceptable that a deal like that isn't scrutinized properly.
Our combined efforts as an international watchdog stopping the prioritisation of profits over people has already pushed several EU countries to raise major concerns about the deal. Now it’s time to put pressure on the Dáil to stop CETA for good.
