If we’ve ever seen shameful corporate corruption -- it’s with cruise lines.
They’re incorporated in tax haven countries like Panama, Bermuda, and Liberia -- so their profits are shielded, and they pay less than 1% in taxes in the US. Now they’re lobbying like hell to also get a federal bailout!
That’s not the end of it. They don’t abide by US labor laws so their staff work 12 hour days/7 days a week for meagerly wages, and they’re some of the worst climate polluters in the world!
The government is deciding right now so we have no time to lose -- let’s make sure cruise lines don’t get a no-strings-attached bailout. Add your name, and when 100,000 people join, SumOfUs will deliver our message through a full-page ad in the Washington Post.
Despite being incorporated in tax havens, many of these companies are “based” in Florida -- an important swing state. This likely gives the companies leverage in negotiations.
Plus, they’re totally in bed with the Trump administration. The CEO of Carnival -- the biggest cruise liner -- was a sponsor of The Apprentice. And the former attorney general of Florida was a fundraiser for the Trump campaign, and now a lobbyist for Carnival!
If these companies won’t pay taxes, won’t treat and pay their workers fairly, and are harming the planet in significant ways, why should taxpayer dollars go towards saving them?
This doesn’t have to spell the end of cruise lines, but it should definitely be a wake-up call.
