Over half a million undocumented migrants currently live in Spain – one in five are children. Every day they fear the repercussions of their insecure status, from police brutality to hunger to deportation.
But right now, Spain has a progressive government, so there’s a real chance of winning change – and grassroots campaigners are trying to make it happen.
For months, they’ve been pacing the streets collecting signatures for a petition that could push the government to grant residency papers – and basic rights – to all undocumented migrants.
They need 500,000 hand-written signatures by September to force Congress to consider the measure, and they’re already more than halfway to the goal. But time is running out.
If enough of us chip in, we can pull out all the stops to make sure they meet the target – funding an avalanche of volunteers to go door to door, as well as public events to spread the word. And we can step up the fight against inhumane immigration policies everywhere. Can you help?
