Amazon super-protector Lula da Silva just won a historic election as President of Brazil.
Last time he was President, deforestation dropped by 80%! His opponent, Jair Bolsonaro, called it his “dream” to destroy the forest…and was making his dreams come true.
This miracle for the Amazon almost didn’t happen.
In the months leading up to the election, Bolsonaro operatives absolutely flooded social media with disinformation and narrowed a huge polling gap, bit by bit.
SumOfUs jumped into the frontlines, hiring a crack research team to analyze and report online posts spreading lies and calls for a military coup. It had massive impact: our work was covered in hundreds of media outlets, and now Brazil’s electoral court is using our findings to help guide them on how to reign in these kinds of lies.
Add it up and the Amazon can breathe again.
But this problem isn’t just in Brazil. Now we have the know-how to take our program far and wide. But we need a cash injection to hire the campaigners, researchers, and lawyers to really make our impact felt. Can you chip in to take our fake-news-busting program global?
