Some positive news on the fight against rape culture: Sony Music has severed ties with Dr. Luke, the record producer Kesha accused of drugging her, raping her and psychologically abusing her for almost a decade.
Dr. Luke is no longer the CEO of Kemosabe records and his profile has been removed from the Sony Music website. Kesha says that Dr. Luke forced her to take the date rape drug when she was 18 and assaulted her. Kesha was trapped in a contract with her alleged abuser and couldn’t work with anyone else without his permission -- and even then, Dr. Luke, not Kesha, would get any earnings she made.
Originally, Sony chose to watch its bottom line over supporting a survivor of abuse -- the billion dollar corporation was reluctant to drop Dr. Luke and his $60 million contract. But over 121,000 SumOfUs members came to her support and people power stood up to corporate greed and rape culture -- and won.
How did we do it?
- We helped spread the word about what Sony was doing to Kesha and even huge celebrities like Lorde and Taylor Swift got on board.
- We swarmed the Sony Music Twitter account making it clear choosing profit over women’s safety is unacceptable.
- We organized press conferences and a huge rally at Sony headquarters in New York -- and delivered all 411,000 signatures directly to a Sony executive.
- And we returned to Sony and projected our messaging onto the building to embarrass them even more. This was covered on the 8pm local New York City news and broadcast into millions of homes in the greater New York area.
Because of the work we did together, Sony has dropped Dr. Luke. It took almost three years, but we did it.
And this is so much more than a win for Kesha. This is a high-profile case about a powerful, wealthy man who thought he could get away with anything. Just like we showed Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly, if corporations are turning a blind eye to your abuse, we will come for you.
Would you consider chipping so we can keep fighting back to end corporate rape culture and putting justice before profits?
