Last week, CETA was on the ropes after it was dealt a “massive body blow” by opposition from the southern Belgian region of Wallonia.
But we’ve just learned that after a week of heavy negotiations, the Walloons have reached an agreement.
Now regional parliaments will vote on the deal by midnight today — meaning the deal could get signed as early as TOMORROW. We have a plan ready to roll out to stop CETA, just like we did with TTIP... but we need your help today.
Will you chip in to help launch a new push to stop the anti-democratic CETA trade deal?
The CETA trade deal is the less famous sister of TTIP, but just as dangerous. This EU-Canada pact would give big corporations the same toolbox to bully democratic governments to do their bidding.
CETA has galvanised protests throughout Europe and Canada, including one last week outside the trade ministers' meeting in Luxembourg, where EU member states had planned to vote on the deal.
The corporate lobbyists thought they had a done deal last week, but a tidal wave of people-powered support that SumOfUs helped mobilize forced them to call off the vote.
Now we need to do it again.
CETA would allow Canadian corporations to sue EU countries just because they claim their regulations harm their profits. And it could allow suits like the one being levelled by Mexican privateers, who are objecting to Portugal’s plans to keep its metro system publicly run.
CETA’s infamous sister deal TTIP is good as dead, thanks to your support. Now, we can make history by killing CETA, too. Will you chip in?
