What's for sale at Carrefour? Eggs, milk and… deforestation! That's right, one of the largest supermarkets in Latin America is contributing to the destruction of the Amazon by buying soy-fed beef, chicken, and pork from two of the largest companies responsible for deforestation in Brazil: meat company JBS and the soy trading company Cargill.
Carrefour invests a real fortune in marketing and communication to show off its environmental commitments... And yet, every year, the results are the same: very little action and more and more destruction. Carrefour must fulfil its promises to the planet and implement new, stricter rules for its suppliers in order to end deforestation caused by beef and soy used to feed chickens and pigs.
Ending deforestation is vital to end the environmental crisis we face. Brazilian and Argentine soy grown to feed pigs and chickens is the main food related cause of deforestation in Europe. Every year an area of Brazilian savannah the size of the City of London is destroyed for soy production!
The expansion of soy production in the Amazon drives indigenous peoples off their lands and puts tens of thousands of native species in danger, including the iconic jaguar, whose population is in free fall.
Help us get Carrefour to stop contributing to Amazon deforestation!
Note: After the Mighty Earth campaign and as explained in the Financial Times, Carrefour Belgium has stopped selling beef jerky produced by JBS and linked to deforestation. We want the entire Carrefour group to stop buying from JBS altogether.
