Later this year, Canada is poised to make a decision about whether or not to ban two major bee-killing, neonic pesticides: clothianidin and thiamethoxam. Both of these toxic chemicals were banned just last week by the EU, because of the deadly effects on bees and the subsequent threat to the food supply. Now Canada has the opportunity to stay at the forefront of global pollinator protection.
70% of our food crops are dependent on pollinators like bees. With mounting evidence showing neonic pesticides are a huge threat to the health of pollinators, without increasing yields of crops, Canada must act to ensure the health of our bees, and food supply.
Decision makers at the Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency (PRMA) are poised to make a decision about banning these two destructive neonic pesticides by the end of the year. This is why they need to hear from you now. A massive public outcry now will show the PMRA that people care about bees and want them protected from these dangerous chemicals.
Tell the PMRA to ban two major neonic pesticides and protect the bees.
The EU just announced a total ban of three major neonicotinoid pesticides, including clothianidin and thiamethoxam. And several major retailers, in North America and Australia, have already committed to not selling these dangerous pesticides.
The EU knew that allowing these pesticides wasn’t worth the risk to pollinators, and now Canada should follow suit. The bees can’t wait for action on this. While the use of these two major pesticides is up for review, we have the unique opportunity to get a ban and help save the bees.
SumOfUs has been fighting for the bees for years. Nearly 650,000 caring SumOfUs members like you came together to call on the EU Commission to ban neonics and protect the bees. And just last week, the EU announced a total ban of three major neonics. We know that, together, we can take on giant pesticide companies -- and win -- to protect the bees.
Tell Canada it’s time for a ban of bee-killing neonics, clothianidin and thiamethoxam.
