London’s air pollution levels are almost DOUBLE that of the limit set by the World Health Organisation.
Car manufacturers BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen paid £223 million into a fund to help the German government tackle air pollution -- but the corporations are resisting the same idea in the capital.
London mayor Sadiq Khan just called the car manufacturers out on their double standards: they know they have a moral duty to help combat this problem, but want to shirk their responsibilities.
With the scale of London’s air pollution getting out of hand, it’s time for manufacturers to do their part and contribute to a new clean air fund.
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen: do your bit to help combat air pollution in London!
London’s air pollution crisis was laid bare this week, with figures showing Londoners are breathing air exceeding global guidelines for dangerous toxic particles.
Khan has asked the government hold car manufacturers to account.
“The government must act urgently to secure a meaningful amount of funding from these manufacturers, which could help people to scrap the most polluting diesel vehicles and take these off our streets.”
Volkswagen declined to commit to a clean air fund from London -- but companies like VW, who were caught lying in 2015's emissions scandal, are major contributors to inner-city pollution, and need to start doing their bit.
Let's pile on the pressure.
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen: take responsibility for your emissions and contribute to a clean-air fund for London!
Just last month SumOfUs members like you helped make sure that Transport for London stood up to Uber, and start holding the taxi app to account for ignoring workers rights. Let's do the same to hold VW, MBW and Mercedes to account for London's toxic air.
