B&Q: Don’t use the living wage as an excuse to cut your workers’ pay!

This is so cynical. B&Q is using the new living wage as an excuse to slash workers’ pay.

A new living wage is being introduced in April. It’s meant to give the country a pay rise. But B&Q is using it as an excuse to slash overall pay for some of its lowest paid workers.

The DIY giant plans to claw back cash it spends on the living wage by scrapping double time for Sundays and bonuses. Some workers will be worse off than they are now to the tune of thousands of pounds.

Right now, B&Q is preparing to sack workers who have refused the pay cut. Let’s stand up for them before it’s too late.

Tell B&Q not to use the living wage as an excuse to cut its workers’ pay.

The national living wage is meant to improve the living standards of Britain’s lowest paid workers, who often face a daily choice between eating and heating their homes. Experts say that the new rate, £7.20 per hour, still isn’t enough to live on -- but at least it means a pay rise for many of the people who most need one.

But now B&Q is using that living wage as an excuse to drive down workers’ wages and take money out of the pockets of the poorest paid shop floor staff. And it’s doing this at the same time as its owner, Kingfisher, launches a plan to increase its profits and return £600 million to shareholders over the next five years.

B&Q is shameless. Its workers deserve a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work -- they don’t deserve to be bullied into accepting a pay cut they can’t afford.

SumOfUs is a global movement of people collectively fighting against corporate greed. Will you take a minute to stand up to B&Q?
