Every week giant, rusty tankers weighed down with coal navigate through the most threatened natural wonder of the world: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
These heavy ships carried 29 million tonnes of coal through the Reef last year. Coal baron Gautam Adani wants to triple that and rip open one of the largest untapped coal reserves in the world a few hundred kilometers inland from the reef.
But Adani needs insurance to build his mine.
SumOfUs members like you have already helped push AIG and Liberty Mutual to pull out --- but we’ve seen leaked contracts which show British firm Aon is brokering a last ditch effort to insure the project!
If built, Adani’s mine would pump out more carbon than the entire economies of Norway, Sweden, Greece and Chile.
We know that to have a future for our children, coal must be kept in the ground. If Adani’s project goes ahead with help from Aon, it will ruin any hope we have of protecting the Great Barrier Reef -- home to some of the most spectacular sea life on our planet like vivid corals, turtles, and fish.
Finding insurance is a key challenge for Adani, with 17 global insurers out of the project already following community pressure. Aon are actively hunting down unethical insurers for Adani’s climate wrecking coal project. Aon is playing a key role in making Adani’s project a reality.
Led by the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners on whose land the mine is being built, people power has forced more than 70 companies to rule out working with Adani. With every week that goes by Adani has fewer companies it can turn to for help.
Just in the last month the threat of campaigns from SumOfUs members like you helped force Samsung and Hanwha to rule out further financing for Adani.
SumOfUs members like you have also helped push some of the world’s largest insurance companies like AIG and Liberty Mutual to get out of the project.
But if Aon secures Adani the insurance it needs then that work could be for nothing. Which means we need the voices of people all over the world to push them out -- and fast.
Tell Aon to walk away from Adani now.
