Amazon made over $33bn in retail sales in just three months this year. But somehow, it still feels the need to profit from stigma against people with eating disorders.
The company has been stocking a hoodie that described Anorexia as “like Bulimia, except with self control.” There’s simply no need to be turning a profit from items like this -- and it’s hardly the first time Amazon has been caught in the act either.
This isn’t just a one-off. Amazon has previously sold clothing which mocked rape, the holocaust and people of African descent, all thanks to a completely inadequate policy on what are considered ‘offensive products.’

Demanding Amazon makes sure it doesn’t profit from these offensive products is hardly too much to ask. Earlier this year, Amazon updated its global compliance policy after a row with the Indian government, after products which broke laws on how the Indian flag can be used were listed on its website.
Clearly, Amazon can change its policies when it suits it -- but when it comes to racism, sexism and mental health stigma, it seems it just doesn’t care enough.
This isn’t just a harmless joke -- as eating disorder charity Beat have said, “The stigma surrounding eating disorders prevents many people from seeking help, and trivialising them in this way only makes it harder for individuals to get help.”
Simply put, Amazon makes enough money already without needing to make even more from this.
Amazon -- change your policy on offensive products and stop profiting from people’s misery.
