The leaders of the 8 Amazon countries just held an emergency summit about the future of the forest – and despite global attention and the demands of frontline Indigenous communities, failed to agree to end deforestation!
This is simply unacceptable. Scientists warn that we’re approaching a “tipping point” of devastation where the forest can no longer grow back on its own. The whole ecosystem could collapse – and with it, our planet’s best natural defense against climate change.
Life on Earth cannot afford this.
It’s critical to let these leaders know, right now, that we’re watching, and that they have fallen short. Join the call for zero Amazon deforestation, and share it everywhere:
Amazon leaders: you have failed; there must be NO Amazon deforestation
Brazil’s last President, Jair Bolsonaro, oversaw a disastrous 60% boom in Amazon deforestation rates. Since he lost the re-election to Lula, deforestation has slowed. Lula recognized the crisis for what it is and hosted this emergency summit.
But the results are simply not good enough. While the countries agreed to curb illegal activities in the Amazon, formed an “alliance”, and met two of the demands from Indigenous communities, it’s simply unfathomable that they failed in their central purpose: to guarantee the future of this forest, and the people who rely on it, by ending deforestation.
The billions of trees that make up the Amazon hold vast amounts of carbon, accumulated over centuries. With record-breaking heat and “once in a lifetime” storms happening practically weekly, losing the world’s most valuable defense system is simply not an option.
We have to make clear that we’re not just disappointed in these leaders – we’re angry. Deforestation in the Amazon has to end, urgently, and that demand must be clear:
Amazon leaders: you must commit to ZERO deforestation
