Big news from me this week: we have decided to rule out providing any further insurance to the Adani Carmichael mine!

It’s taken us a bit of time to get here. You probably saw the protests outside our Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane offices last month, or the petition that attracted 135,000 signatures calling on us to rule out insuring the project.

So after some careful thought, we’ve decided to act in the best interests of the planet and our business and say no to Adani.

This is good news for the climate: Adani’s proposed mine would open up one of the largest untapped coal reserves in the world at a time when we know we must be leaving fossil fuels in the ground and transitioning to a clean economy.

Good news for traditional owners: the Wangan and Jagalingou traditional owners oppose this mine. Adani’s response has been to bankrupt one of their leaders and push to have their native title extinguished.

Good news for the Great Barrier Reef: shipping all that coal would require hundreds more risky ship movements through the reef each year.

Good news for the black-throated finch: the largest population of this endangered finch live right on the proposed site for the mine. So we’ll no longer be insuring their extinction!

Good news for our business: 14 other insurance companies have ruled out insuring the Adani mine. It would have been a bad look if we’d continued to underwrite a company with such a terrible track record of corporate abuses.
